Biography
Laura Rodríguez Frank is an oil painter raised in Puerto Rico. She arrived in the continental United States in the 1970s to work and finish a graduate degree in Biochemistry, leaving behind her family and friends. She had not planned to stay, but she met her future husband, married, and raised a family, remaining on the East Coast until now. Thus, for most of her life, she has been part of a unique American diaspora, freely traveling back and forth to her island in what has been appropriately called the vaiven. This term, like many things Puerto Rican, is a patchwork, a combination of the Spanish words va, to go, and ven, to return. As we travel back and forth, we live in a constant in-between, not truly belonging to any one place but with deep connections to both.
In New York, Laura completed her medical degree and became a Child Psychiatrist. She often used art as a visual means of expression and a therapeutic tool. Although primarily self-taught, she took classes in local art schools, exploring charcoal figure studies, watercolor, abstract painting, and mixed-media work. Her mentor, the artist Robert Glaisek, encouraged her to explore oils. This media quickly became her focus, and after retiring from her practice in 2021, she decided to return to graduate school to obtain her Master’s in Fine Art at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco. Her primary interests include plein-air landscapes, still life, and figure. Her work is primarily representational and expressive.
